  • Recommended dietary allowance (rda) in pregnancy = 2.2 mcg/day.

  • Crosses human placenta by active transport, neonatal levels are higher than maternal.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency is teratogenic in animals.
  • No adequate human data in pregnancy but suggested possible association between the defeciency of this vitamin and neural tube defects, prematurity, and low birth weight.
  • No fetal harm has been reported with high doses.
  • Severe maternal Vitamin B12 deficiency can result in: Infertility, and megaloblastic anemia.
