  • It is a human teratogen.
  • Reported to cause spontaneous abortion when used before conception.
  • Exposure in first trimester was reported to cause congenital anomalies including: microcephaly, hydrocephaly, club foot and hypoplasia of hip joints.
  • Use of radioiodine near the end of first trimester and beyond causes partial or complete destruction of fetal thyroid gland.
  • Therapeutic and diagnostic doses should be avoided during pregnancy.
