  • analgesic antipyretic with antacid.

  • Aluminum hydroxide used in high doses is fetotoxic in animals.
  • No adequate human data but considered safe in the last two trimesters if chronic high doses are avoided and if not used with lactic, citric and ascorbic acid which increase aluminum absorption.
  • Magnesium hydroxide should not be used in the 1st trimester.
  • Safe in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters if high chronic doses are avoided that can cause neonatal hyper magnesemia, drowsiness, decreased muscle tone, respiratory distress and cardiovascular impairement.
  • Acetylsalicylic acid in low doses has no fetal risk, but in high doses in the 3rd trimester it can cause premature closure of pulmonary artery to aorta">ductus arteriosus, neonatal pulmonary hypertension, stillbirth and intrauterine growth retardation, High doses near term cause bleeding disorders in the newborns.
  • Controversial association with congenital defects (heart defects, oral cleft) if used in the 1st trimester.
  • Questionable effect of high doses on the IQ of children exposed in utero in the first half of pregnancy.
