  • Aluminum hydroxide used in high doses is fetotoxic in animals.
  • No adequate human data but considered safe in the last two trimesters if chronic high doses are avoided and if not used with lactic, citric and ascorbic acid which increase aluminum absorption.
  • Magnesium hydroxide should not be used in the 1st trimester.
  • Safe in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters if high chronic doses are avoided that can cause neonatal hyper magnesemia, drowsiness, decreased muscle tone, respiratory distress and cardiovascular impairement.
