  • Triamterene crosses the placenta in animals, unknown in human.
  • No adequate human data no association with fetal adverse effects has been reported when used anytime in pregnancy but as it can affect placental perfusion, it is contraindicated in pregnancy except in patients with heart failure.
  • Use of thiazides including including benzthiazide reported to be associated with increased risk of cardiovascular defects in 1st trimester exposure.
