  • Captopril is embryocidal in animals increasing the stillbirth rate.
  • No well-controlled human studies in 1st trimester but no association with congenital anomalies has been reported.
  • The drug is teratogenic and fetotoxic if used in 2nd and 3rd trimesters causing:- oligohydramnios leading to skull deformities, limb contractures, pulmonary hypoplasia, intrauterine growth retardation, renal tubular dysplasia leading to neonatal anuria and renal failure, severe neonatal hypotension, prematurity and intrauterine fetal death.
