  • No well – controlled human data for chlorpheniramine, reported possible association with congenital malformations including polydactyly, eye, ear defects, inguinal hernia, gastrointestinal and genital defects dislocation of the hip Useof antihistamines in the last two weeks of pregnancy reported to cause retrolental fibroplasia in premature infants.
  • Caffeine is teratogenic in animals at maternal toxic doses. Suggested association between high caffeine intake with decreased fertility, increased abortion rate , low birth weight, growth retardation and preterm delivery. maternal caffeine intake of more than 500mg/day may be associated with neonatal cardiac arrythmias as a feature of caffeine withdrawal and change in fetal behavior (frequent body movement, irregular FHR baseline and breathing activity).
  • Phenylephrine is teratogenic in animals, no well-controlled human data but suggested possible association with eye, ear, terminal divisions of a limb (finger or toe)">digital defects and clubfoot during, 1st trimester exposure and with musculoskeletal defects and umbilical hernia during exposure anytime in pregnancy. It may cause uterine vessele spasm resulting in fetal bradycardia and hypoxia.
  • No fetal risk with acetylsalicylic acid at low doses. High doses in 3rd trimester can cause premature closure of pulmonary artery to aorta">ductus arteriosus, neonatal pulmonary hypertension, stillbirth and intrauterine growth retardation. High doses near term cause bleeding disorders in the newborns. Controversial association with congenital defects (heart defects, oral clefts) if used in the 1st trimester. Questionable effect of high doses on the IQ of children exposed in utero in the first half of pregnancy. High doses can cause congenital slicylate intoxication (hypertonia, irritability).

  • Acetylsalicylic acid is excreted into milk in small amounts should be used with caution because of possible adverse effects on infant’s platelet function.
