  • teratogenic in animals causing craniofacial, cardiovascular and skeletal malformations in first trimester exposure.
  • Fetotoxic in animals at high doses during the later stage of pregnancy causing decreased body weight and behavior activity, and increased fetal mortality rate.
  • No well controlled human data but oxcarbazepine has structural similarity to carbamazepine which is a known human teratogen.
  • If used in 3rd trimester of pregnancy may cause neonatal bleeding tendency, so vitamin K1 prophylaxis should be given to the mother before delivery.
